On the brink of World War II, Virginia Woolf advised women to remember, learn from, and use derision, of which they had long been objects.[1]Three Guineas, Woolf’s classic essay of ethico-political thought, counts derision among the great “un-paid teachers” of women, educating them about the behavior and motives of human beings, about, that is, psychology, a field that Woolf, unlike many leftist critics today, did not separate from that of the political.[2] Before writing the essay, Woolf had received requests for contributions from three organizations, each promoting a different cause: women’s education, the advancement of women in the professions, and the prevention of war.
